After having company over during the past weekend, the topic of nutrition came up, as it usually does. I usually get asked what do I eat, what do I cook with and so on. The answer is; I only cook with coconut oil. Its extremely stable under medium to high heat, adds great flavor, and is a healthy source of saturated fat. The typical response I get is “Really? Its saturated fat and isn’t that bad for you?” I proceed with my explanation and hopefully the answer satisfies them. Well this past weekend I avoided the answer and decided to blog about it instead. This one is for you Mr. Matt Morgan, I hope this explanation is fitting for you.

If you’re one that has already incorporated coconut oil in your life then you know that this stuff is phenomenal. For those of you that haven’t experienced the excellence that is coconut oil, you better head to your nearest health food store and snag some. It will be the best eight or so dollars you have spent in awhile. Have you ever heard the saying “If u can’t eat it then you shouldn’t put it on your skin?” Well, you can with coconut oil. It is a jack-of-all-trades food. Besides the cooking aspects, coconut oil has a plethora of other properties. Yes, it is a saturated fat, get over it!

Coconut oil is made up of medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which do not get stored in the body as fat. The liver quickly converts this fat into metabolized energy which means increased thermogenic effects and a more efficient metabolism resulting in a somewhat effortless weight-loss. Coconut also improves sluggish thyroid function that also aids in weight-loss and proper hormone regulation.

Coconut oil is made up of 50% lauric acid, which is the main component in mother’s breast milk. This potent anti-microbial and anti-bacterial source is how infants build a strong digestive/immune system. Besides mother’s milk the other three sources of lauric acid can be found in coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and butterfat.  What other source of food is known for it’s, anti-fungal, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, anti-viral properties, all wrapped in one!

Get sick often due to a weakened immune system? Throw back coconut oil on a regular basis to give the immune system a healthy boost. It has strong anti-viral properties, a wonderful antioxidant to help fight free radical damage and prevent oxidative stress that contributes to inflammation in the body as well.

Coconut aids in proper digestion and assimilation. Your digestive system will have a better ability to absorb vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. The oils properties kill bacteria, fungi, and parasites that thrive in a weakened digestive system.

So, now that the health benefits have been discussed from eating coconut oil, lets talk about the beauty benefits as well! My girlfriend, friends, and family make fun of me because I have two jars of coconut oil. One for consuming, and the other for my face and hair. It’s like having two cutting boards for meat and veggies, no cross contamination. These secrets were passed down from my mentor and friend Sean Croxton of Underground Wellness. I apply it to my face and let it set for 20 or 30 minutes. I shower and wash it off, but oh does it make my skin so silky smooth! Coconut oil is an ideal all-natural moisturizer; its antioxidant properties help with wrinkles and sagging skin due to free radical damage. The anti-fungal properties can also help most topical skin issues. In addition, I put it in my hair before/after I shower to moisturize and repair damage. I told you, it’s a jack-of-all-trades!
